SHOW #156 Sophie Scott-Brown

Could we survive without a world of ‘State Trade secrets’ ‘classified documents’ and ‘defending the National Interest’? And could we survive with no Pharo’s, Kings and Queens, Ceaser’s, Presidents, Pope’s, Ceo’s and alike?
Instead placing our time and energy in ways that positively contribute to the culture and society at large, as well as improving our own one to one interactions in our personal lives. All the whilst honouring individual pursuit to foster the conditions that create value in happiness. To question if we really want to continue to chase after that dangling carrot presented in front of us. Why not set our own agendas instead of getting lost in false status based hiearchy?

Joining me is guest Sophie Scott-Brown. Sophie is a modern intellectual historian and philosopher specialising in direct democracy. Her research interests is in modern European political thought, Anarchism, and the history of education. Her historical work on left-wing politics, especially the post-war British left, has earned her widespread recognition.

Show #131 The Far Right In Europe

image

Nearly 70 years after the fall of the Nazi regime, the far right and even fascism are again a significant threat in Europe. In the May 2014 European Parliament elections, organisations with a range of fascist, racist and anti-migrant ideologies won significant votes in a number of European countries. The National Front topped the poll in France and explicitly Nazi parties won seats in countries like Germany and Greece.

This book is survey of the far right in seven countries of Europe with different political histories: Britain, Bulgaria, Denmark, France, Hungary, Italy, Netherlands and Sweden. The survey, by activists and researchers from these countries, reveals a disturbing picture of far-right parties, some with a mass base, which have been able to drag the mainstream political parties to the right. This book is a contribution to understand the nature of the far right, and to develop strategies for the left to confront this threat.

This recording is Author Bernhard Schmid presenting the book ‘The Far Right In Europe’ at Housemans Bookshop.
