Show #58 – General Strike?

IWW General Strike poster

Donnacha DeLong presents his monthly show on The Circled A. The TUC congress voted last week to consider “the practicalities of a general strike”, a step forward from years of rejecting calls from some unions to call a general strike immediately. However, with union membership at its lowest level since the 1940s and largely concentrated in the public sector, it’s unlikely any big strike would actually be general. Becca Kirkpatrick from Solidarity Magazine (@solidaritymag) and Stuart from the Industrial Workers of the World discuss the prospects for a general strike in the UK and what unions need to do to get there.

Show #55 Ground Control

Anna Minton talks about her book ‘Ground Control’, and on the show we focus on the London 2012 Olympics. Britain’s streets have been transformed by the construction of new property – but it’s owned by private corporations, designed for profit and watched over by CCTV.  Have these gleaming business districts, mega malls, gated developments – even the Olympic Park – led to ‘regeneration’, or have they intensified social divisions and made us more fearful of each other? It reveals the untested – and unwanted – urban planning that is changing not only our cities, but the nature of public space, of citizenship and of trust.

In the first of his regular monthly guest slots on the Circled A Show, Dubliner Donnacha DeLong talks to Gregor Kerr of the Workers Solidarity Movement and Mark Hoskins of Unlock NAMA about what is happening on the ground and if there’s a chance things will get more radical.
